Palestine coverage through 1 Feb 08

I try to reprise the principal stories of interest from this week in this selection, ranging from the coverage of the Gaza “breach” across Rafah, to the call for Palestinian ethnic cleansing by the chief rabbi in Israel, to the depressing reality of the power cuts in Gaza (see especially the story on this from the Independent — number 14 below) and the affirmation of collective punishment by the Israeli supreme court, to the Israel politics seeping into attacks on Barack Obama in the US.

Certainly worth reading are two notable opinion pieces — the one by the indomitable Amira Hass (to quote her critique of what she rightly calls the “Ramallah government” [rather than the PA] in the face of the tragedy in Gaza: “Mahmoud Abbas met with Ehud Olmert without preconditions during the same weekend when Israel imposed the cruelest siege yet on Gaza, but Abbas can’t speak to Ismail Haniyeh without the Hamas leader accepting his preconditions?” — history will not be kind to Abu Mazen for his constant collaboration with Israel and the US at the expense of Palestinians); and the other a piece on dual citizenship by Barenboim (a step towards a one state solution?) Of course, Palestinians are in no position to be granted “honorary” Israeli citizenship (ironically, while the Palestinians are willing to grant such status to Israelis like Barenboim, they don’t actually have a capacity to confer Palestinian nationality anymore than they have an ability to claim Israeli citizenship), but still an interesting reflection by Barenboim.

I also particularly recommend Henry Siegman’s piece in the LRB (item 8). Either Siegman is getting more bold with the passage of time or he is subject to less editorial controls (I suspect the latter, since he is now writing in the LRB and not subject to the limitations of vision suffered in publications of the Council on Foreign relations), but his writing is more and more spot-on. This piece, entitled “Gaza’s Future” puts the American role in the slow-motion humanitarian catastrophe that is Gaza in proper perspective.
