Palestine coverage through 9 July 08

Today’s selection of media includes coverage of yet another round of Israeli raids in the West Bank. This time they attacked a shopping mall, yesterday it was a girls’ school and a medical centre.  News of the amount of aid disbursed to the Palestinian Authority (wrongly reported on as monies disbursed to Palestinians) — just under $1 billion in 6 months — is accompanied by the observation by officials that the aid money is being hindered from having any effect by Israeli restrictions on Palestinian movement within Palestinian territories. One should note that the checkpoints are dividing Palestinians from Palestinians, running through Palestinian lands, and have no security rationale whatsoever related to entry of Palestinians into Israeli territory.

Coverage of Fayyad’s call for foreign troops in Gaza (and soon even West Bank forces may amount to “foreign” troops when it comes to Gaza, due to its incredible isolation from even the West Bank at this stage) is included though the proposal seems ludicrous on its face. Since when are foreign troops permitted to advance any Palestinian interest by the Israelis? (even if that interest is defending the PA from the wrath of the abandoned civilian population of Gaza!)

Finally, by way of human interest stories are the last two items — one reporting on the battle by a 6-year-old girl and her family to remain in Israel for medical treatment after an Israeli attack left her completely paralyzed, and another story reporting on the decision of a Palestinian family who lost a teenage child to Israeli fire to donate organs to save the lives of Israelis. It is hard to believe stories like these are still possible.
