Farewell Mahmoud Darwish

On Saturday 9 August Mahmoud Darwish, the extraordinary poet whose poetics captured all too well the condition of Palestinian displacement and suffering,  died after complications with open heart surgery.  I direct you to this obituary in The Daily Star where you can read more about his work and life.

Thanks for that, Jumana, and thanks to Noor who elsewhere posted some of Darwish’s poetry which was the eloquent exception to the vitriolic comments that this blog has seen in recent days. Here are a few more links to obituaries of Mahmoud Darwish.

Do you know that Darwish’s village, Al Birweh east of Acre, was destroyed by the Zionist gangs in 1948 when he was seven, and two Israeli Kibbutzim, Yas’ur and Achihud, were built on its land ?
